Who We Are

The Alabama Society for Clinical Social Work is a nonprofit professional organization comprised of licensed social workers who teach, supervise, manage or provide direct clinical services to consumers with the full spectrum of mental and emotional disorders. The Alabama Society for Clinical Social Work was formed in 1973 to represent the interests of clinical social workers and their clients.

What We Do

Our continuing purpose is to provide high quality educational programs to the profession, promote standards of practice for Clinical Social Work in the State of Alabama, mentor new therapists, and advocate for our clients and profession in the legislative arena. The ASCSW is affiliated with the Clinical Social Work Association and abides by its code of ethics.

Important News

In January 2019 Alabama Medicaid released policy changes that directly impact Social Workers and our ability to provide behavioral health services to Medicaid recipients.

Under the new policies in Chapter 34 of the Provider Manual:
Social Workers and LMFTs can only see clients if a psychologist completes an Alabama Medicaid Psychology (AMP) referral for that client. This referral form is good for a maximum of one year and outlines the number of visits or months that are approved. This form must be kept in the client’s chart. Individual psychotherapy codes 90791 (Psychiatric Diagnostic Procedures, typically used for intake assessments) and 90785 (Interactive Complexity Psychiatry Services and Procedures) are now only billable by a psychologist or LPC. Group therapy must be performed by a clinical psychologist licensed in the state of Alabama. We must use a modifier to identify our discipline, and will be reimbursed at 75% of the allowable amount. This applies to LPCs as well as Social Workers and LMFTs.
